Maybe the most scenic course in West Virginia--it sits on top of a mountain with 360-degree views. The course itself is relatively flat with an interesting layout and strategic bunkering. Good variety of short and long holes. Greens were smooth but had some blight--the greens are big enough so pins were placed accordingly. Course is remote and hard to find, but a good experience when you get there.
A friend and I played there on a Saturday in early May. We had never ben there and had a hard time finding it, we finally followed another golfer that we met at a convenience store. When we arrived in the parking lot, there were fw cars. We played 27 holes and did not get held up on any of the holes. Abosulutely amazing course. Wide forgiving fairways and fast greens. We had a blast! Will definately return.
Well, I must admit I started wondering 3 hours from home traveling through some of the poorest communities of WV, then up a mountain switchback, through a mine security entrance to the top of what was once amountain...but it is amazing and depressing! First, the staff is fantastic, OHHHH, the burgers to die for!(Handpressed, grilled and WOW!), but the course is about dead! NO WATER! Their pump has died, it comes from an underground mine, so the pond has dried and 85% of all the fairways are gone! It is now a brown, dusty, crusty nightmare! I played and while it can be a great course one must wonder will it come back and how long will it take, for now...it is sadly like the land around it desolate, and sad. OH, as I putted for a par on the first hole, my wife holding the flag, to our right, BOOM! The dust cloud rose over the barren valley, yes they were blasting away another mountain, the booms continued on Saturday till a little after noon...Twisted Gun is different, and a point of reflection of the game, the land, the people and the environment! I hope thay save her, otherwise it joins the list of other pieces of land in the area, neglected and left to die!
