Not many golfers can say they have played at 7,000 feet altitude, but Bear Mountain Golf Course in Southern California offers that adventure and so much more.

Located 80 miles east of Los Angeles, Bear Mountain Golf Course offers breathtaking views and a well-designed, challenging layout. The nine-hole, par-35 course is just 2,783 yards long, but there are plenty of hazards that can trip you up along the way.

Many bunkers and large pine trees are located throughout the course and water comes into play on several holes. Since the course is located in the mountains, windy days have a major impact on your shot. Pack a jacket and be prepared to alter your swing for the winds.

Something else to consider when it comes to the altitude – the thinner air means the ball will travel farther on each shot. Take some time hitting balls on the driving range to determine whether you will need to go down a club on your shots.

The greens are very well-manicured and roll smoothly. The course is in great shape overall, but the cart paths are in pretty bad shape and bumpy.

At 527 yards, the par-5 second hole might be the toughest on the course. The fairway is extremely tight with mature trees on both sides. Stay in the middle of the fairway or pay the price on the scorecard.

The course offers spectacular views of the nearby San Bernardino Mountains. Visit in the summer to escape the Southern California heat or come this time of year and enjoy a kaleidoscope of changing leaves.

In addition to the golf course, Bear Mountain offers a 300-yard driving range, a practice green and chipping area. Special events like clinics and Glow Golf are offered throughout the season, so check with the pro shop for times and dates.

Choose to play from two different tees depending on the challenge you are looking for. The course isn't easy but it is enjoyable for most levels of golfers.

The greens fee with cart is just under $50, which seems like a bargain considering the scenery and great maintenance of the course. Bear Mountain Golf Course is an experience we highly recommend.
